In de siberische kou.St.

The last post...Den Bosch 30 may 2006: Ah home sweet home... We have been home for about 3 weeks month now already and being home has been so 'busy'for us that we haven't even taken the time to write a last post and tell about the last leg of our journey. From st. Petersburg we took the train to Helsinki and started cycling there. It took us a day to plough through the snow around Helsinki when we found out that without a compass in Finland one is utterly lost. There are no signs and the sun is nowhere to be seen. At 4 o'clock we simply ended up where we had started that morning and so we immediately took a boat to Stockholm from there. Stockholm was great, beautiful city, medieval buildings, old ships, beautiful blond girls, knäckebröt, yadeyadeyade. With a powerful headwind we started off towards the South and primarily came through woods and farmland with the occasional empty wooden house and church every 50 kms or so. It was cold and windy and there were no covered or windfree places to stop along the way so we simply cycled on untill we reached our destination every day as stopping along the way would mean cooling down too much. Even the Toco Tholin warmth balsem couldn't keep us warm completely. In Germany it was getting warmer already and the cycling was easier with clean roads to ride on. In no-time we arrived in Seelscheid Neunkirchen near Cologne where we were welcomed by Alice's family who had organized a gigantic party in their house, this was great and the extra surprise was that my uncle, sister and mother arrived an hour later too! We could hardly tear ourselves away after a few days to ride the last few hundred km's... But although we had seen a couple of hills in Germany, after Cologne while following the Rhine the road went downhill and the sun started to shine. We even camped along the way, riding home was a breeze! In Den Bosch near our frontdoor friends and family were waiting for us to arrive with flags and horns and a party in our own house. Such a great way to end this trip! Against common expectations we love to be home and we haven't missed the cycling yet although we have started at our fitnessclub to keep in shape:-) I start my new job the day after tomorrow and Alice will start hers in 2 weeks from now and life has kind of turned back to normal. There are some pictures, but not many yet, of our "homecoming" for you to see but most of you we have already met and partied with of course!! Love, |
